Think about this as you go throughout the day. How many times do you think of a great idea? You’re walking to your car, going to the grocery store, or even ironing your clothes. And there it is. The perfect idea for your song or article just comes right to mind. Now you mentally bookmark it, hoping to remember to write it down at a later time. Or worse yet, you hope you remember when you’re ready to write the article. But as we all know, we lead busy lives and we just can’t remember everything. So what I have learned to do, is right down every great idea that I have.
It’s sort of an annoying thing when I get a lot of them late at night after I’ve gone to bed. Either right before going to sleep, or sometime after I wake up from a dream. The perfect idea comes to mind, and I have to get up out of bed to write it down before I forget. Another drawback to that, is that in my laziness I use shorthand, and by the time the morning rolls around I have already forgotten what it meant. So I’m going to give you two tips that will help you organize your notes.
First, go to your local stationary store or Hallmark store, and pick up a to do list. Many times these are simple pads where the words to do are across the top. They will often come with a little boxes beside each line so you can check off once a task is done. They are a good way to keep all your notes and ideas in one place, and let you make notations when you have them or discarded them as not so good. It may seem really simple, but you’ll be surprised how many ideas you end up keeping using this method. Next is for are you smart phone users. Go to your local App store and pick up a dictation software app. Some of them are free, but even the paid ones usually run you less than five dollars. You can then just plug in your headphones with a small mic, and every time you have a great idea hit the record button and just say whatever is on your mind.
Some programs let you store your notes in the various folders, or at the very least you can email them to yourself to be stored in your email. During the day I think this is the easier method, because you just hit a button speak your mind and let it go. Then the next time you’re writing that great song or article you’ll have an abundance of ideas at your fingertips to help your project to go that much smoother.
